Even though the Cleveland Browns’ OTAs and minicamp are already in the books, the saga and discussions surrounding the team’s quarterback situation haven’t ended. It remains a daily topic of analysis across various media outlets–especially because one of the competitors is Shedeur Sanders.
Shedeur Sanders has polarized the entire Browns camp due to everything that comes with him: he’s a media figure, had a strong year at the University of Colorado, and is the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders. Practically his entire life, Shedeur has been under the spotlight, and now that he’s in the NFL, even more so.
Shedeur could’ve entered the NFL as a star with a strong case to be a starter–had projections been right and he’d been drafted in the first round. But that didn’t happen. He slid all the way down to the fifth round, and now he has to compete against three other quarterbacks.
The Cleveland Browns could keep all four quarterbacks
A widely discussed topic around the Browns’ quarterback battle is how unlikely it is for a team to keep four players at that position. Normally, teams carry two quarterbacks on the active roster and one on the practice squad, making it very rare to have room for four.
In the Browns’ case, there are four: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and the two rookies–Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Every analyst seems to have a favorite candidate to be cut or traded, but Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com believes the Browns could hold on to all four.
“But quarterback is the most important position on the team, and the Browns now have two development prospects in Gabriel and Sanders, along with a veteran with potential upside in Pickett. If someone makes them an offer they can’t refuse, they’ll listen. But keeping four is definitely within the realm of possibility,” Cabot wrote.
It’s not the first time Cabot has brought up this scenario. In fact, she’s the only insider advocating for it–others have their own picks for who’s likely to be cut. Keeping all four is highly unlikely, but then again, with the Cleveland Browns–a franchise known for unpredictability–anything can happen.
