Before tipoff on Tuesday night, a viral moment lit up social media: Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks was caught on camera fixated on Lakers legend LeBron James during pregame warmups.
The intensity of his stare was so striking that the Suns themselves shared the clip on their official X account with the caption “Getting ready for action”, generating widespread buzz across the NBA community. Fans and analysts immediately noticed the tension, sensing that something was brewing between the two longtime rivals.
Brooks‘ rivalry with LeBron is well-documented. Over the years, the Suns forward has made it abundantly clear that he enjoys pushing the Lakers superstar’s buttons, both on and off the court. And this particular matchup provided yet another opportunity to display his competitive edge.
However, as is often the case with Brooks, his intensity sometimes crosses into questionable decision-making that catches referees, and fans, off guard.
The most talked-about incident came very early in the game. As LeBron prepared for a free throw, Brooks jogged into the lane before the ball left James’ hand. Not stopping there, he even walked in front of the superstar in a move that drew immediate attention from officials.
When the free throw missed, the referees called a lane violation, allowing LeBron a second attempt. While the rule exists to maintain fairness, Brooks‘ decision seemed unnecessary and counterproductive.
Players do sometimes try to subtly disrupt opponents during free throws, but entering the lane this overtly suggested a mix of gamesmanship and desire to push LeBron‘s buttons. Brooks undoubtedly knows the rule and risked the penalty intentionally.
Suns have their way with the Lakers
The Suns pre-game social media post proved correct, as Brooks was most certainly locked in for the game. The 29-year-old led the way for Phoenix with 25 points in 24 minutes in a 132-108 win.
Devin Booker chipped in with 21 points, 11 assists and two steals, while Mark Williams had 18 points, nine rebounds in two blocks.
As for LeBron, he finished the night with 21 points, six assists and two rebounds, while Deandre Ayton had 12 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
The win moves the sounds to 16-13 on the season, which is good enough for eighth in the Western Conference, while the Lakers drop to 19-9 to sit fourth.
As for when fans can expect the next chapter in the Brooks-LeBron rivalry, the two teams will next play on February 26, 2006 in Phoenix, before rounding out their season series in Los Angeles on April 10.
