The uncomfortable truth in Philadelphia: Saquon Barkley, not A.J. Brown, is the real anchor

The Philadelphia Eagles continue moving like reigning champions, although the Los Angeles Rams have emerged as a strong contender that already seems to be overtaking them in the race toward Super Bowl LX. The Eagles’ inconsistency raises far more questions than answers.

For several weeks, the ongoing drama between quarterback Jalen Hurts and receiver A.J. Brown has dominated discussion. Whether Hurts is avoiding throwing to him, whether Brown wanted out, or whether he only cares about personal stats regardless of results-these narratives have generated constant chatter that does little to help the franchise internally.

However, something Nick Sirianni’s team must consider more seriously is the need to emphasize the running game. The 2025 season has been a brutal drop-off for Saquon Barkley with the Eagles.

The Eagles returned to a spectacular aerial attack, but forgot to run with Saquon Barkley

It appears the relationship between the Eagles’ stars, quarterback Jalen Hurts and receiver A.J. Brown, is improving. In their Week 12 matchup this past Sunday, November 23, they shone with spectacular plays and major yardage gains, yet the team still lost to the Dallas Cowboys.

Something in the air has become impossible to ignore: in their effort to keep Brown satisfied, they are neglecting Barkley and the ground attack that was lethal in the 2024 season and played a vital role in reaching the championship game and eventually defeating the Kansas City Chiefs.

Saquon Barkley delivered a very poor performance against the Cowboys, with only 10 carries for 22 yards. Meanwhile, on the other side of the equation, Hurts threw 39 passes, completing 27, with three touchdowns (two rushing) and a total of 289 yards gained.

A.J. returned to the spotlight, a place he desperately craved, and finished with 110 yards on eight receptions and one touchdown. The smile returned to his face, but the team lost; whether that matters to him is another question.

A rough 2025 for Saquon Barkley

So far in the 2025 season, running back Saquon Barkley has only one game-one, just one, with 100 yards or more. This stands in stark contrast with the previous season, during which he surpassed 2,000 yards.

The Dallas Cowboys accumulated a total of 125 rushing yards in the recent matchup, while Philadelphia managed only 63. The pressure applied by Dallas to stop the Eagles’ ground game was a major factor, demonstrating significant progress in that area.

The Eagles need to balance their offense more effectively. They have already proven that running outside and varying their ball movement works extremely well, yet they now suffer from leaning too heavily on one approach.

Next game for the Philadelphia Eagles

This upcoming Friday, November 28, the Philadelphia Eagles will face the Chicago Bears in Week 13, one day after the Thanksgiving matchups that will surely heighten the excitement.

For now, Philadelphia maintains a comfortable lead in its division over its closest pursuer, the Cowboys, who defeated them in Week 12. If the Eagles let their guard down, their postseason aspirations could be threatened by a resurgent Dallas team that will face the Chiefs before Thanksgiving dinner.
