The two players who can help Patrick Mahomes after Xavier Worthy’s game-ending injury with the Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs face immediate challenges in their wide receiver room following injuries and a suspension that emerged during Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The team, which entered the season with one of the NFL’s most competitive receiving corps, now must address short-term depth concerns to maintain offensive consistency.

Rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy suffered a dislocated shoulder after colliding with tight end Travis Kelce in the Chargers matchup.

Worthy was taken off the field and transported to the locker room, leaving his availability for upcoming games uncertain.

Compounding the issue, second-year receiver Rashee Rice will serve a six-game suspension, which removes a key offensive option until Week 7 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The combined absence of Worthy and Rice places greater responsibility on the remaining receiving corps and emphasizes the need for experienced alternatives.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes relies on a diverse set of targets to sustain a vertical passing attack, making depth at wide receiver a priority for the Chiefs‘ front office.

Odell Beckham Jr. remains an unsigned free agent

Two potential veteran solutions have emerged as options to fill the gap. Odell Beckham Jr., who most recently played for the Miami Dolphins, was present at the Chiefs–Chargers game in São Paulo, Brazil, celebrating with Kelce.

While past his prime, Beckham‘s experience and leadership could provide immediate assistance in both practice and game situations.

In 2024, Beckham appeared in nine games and recorded 55 receiving yards, demonstrating that he is capable of contributing in a limited role.

Another possible addition is Rashard Robinson II, a veteran wide receiver whose peak playing years are behind him.

Robinson offers familiarity with NFL systems and a professional presence in the locker room, making him a viable option for short-term depth while the team assesses Worthy’s recovery timeline.

Adding a veteran receiver, whether Beckham, Robinson, or both, would allow the Chiefs to maintain offensive continuity and protect Mahomes from overreliance on inexperienced receivers.

Both options could contribute immediately in rotational roles and provide mentorship to younger players returning from injury or suspension.

The Chiefs‘ front office must balance roster flexibility and salary considerations with the need to sustain production on the field.

Veteran additions could mitigate risks associated with early-season depth issues and ensure that Mahomes retains reliable targets for key passing situations.

The early setbacks in Kansas City’s receiving corps highlight the importance of roster preparedness and strategic depth management in the NFL.

With careful personnel decisions, the Chiefs have the potential to overcome these challenges and preserve their offensive effectiveness while awaiting the return of Rice and Worthy later in the season.
