The baseball community is in mourning following the tragic death of Luis Guevara, a promising 19-year-old Venezuelan baseball player who died last Sunday in a jet ski accident in Sarasota, Florida. Guevara was part of the Baltimore Orioles minor league system, a team that confirmed the news on Monday through an official statement.
According to reports from the Sarasota Police Department, the accident occurred near Lido Key, when two jet skis collided head-on shortly after 8:00 p.m. All those involved were thrown into the water. Guevara was immediately taken to a local hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.
The news shocked not only the Orioles team, but also the professional baseball community. Orioles general manager Mike Elias lamented the tragedy in the statement:
“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Luis. He was a young man with a bright future in baseball and a contagious energy in the clubhouse. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates,” he said.
Tributes on social media
Through social networks, many teams, players, fans and people linked to MLB showed their support for the family of Luis and paid tribute to the promising player. The tragedy hit the baseball world very hard and several statements were published on the social network X.
“Luis was a beloved member of our organization, and we are devastated by his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this time. We ask that you please respect the family’s privacy as they mourn this tragic loss”, the Orioles said in a statement shared on X.
A promising career
Luis Guevara had signed for the Orioles in 2023 as an international free agent. Originally from Venezuela, the youngster was playing his second professional season in the United States, playing for the Orioles’ team in the Florida Complex League (FCL). So far this season, he had played 30 games, with a .281 batting average, a solid base in stolen bases (44) and 49 RBIs, figures that showed his growing projection.
Unfortunately, his career was cut short by this accident and his figure will remain in the history of the club as a young, cheerful and energetic player who sought to make his way in his favorite sport, but fate inexplicably intervened.
