Bo Bichette’s position with the Mets is revealed

The New York Mets moved quickly in the winter market and after seeing how the Dodgers beat their offer for Kyle Tucker, the Queens franchise agreed on Friday to a three-year, $126 million contract for 27-year-old shortstop Bo Bichette, with opt-outs after the first two seasons.

With his arrival at the Mets, the team’s fans wondered what the player’s official position will be for next season.

Bo Bichette arrives at the Mets: What will his position be?

Bichette began his baseball journey when he was selected in the second round of the 2016 draft out of Arizona State University. In 2019, he made his MLB debut with the Blue Jays. He was a two-time MLB All-Star in 2021 and 2023. In addition, he was the National League hits leader in 2021 and 2022. Now the Orlando, Florida native will face a new challenge in New York.

His signing comes after some significant departures ahead of the 2026 season. The club’s all-time home run leader, Pete Alonso, signed with the Baltimore Orioles and the Mets were unable to do anything to keep him, while closer Edwin Diaz ended up leaving for the Dodgers after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract.

The Brazilian-American, after playing primarily at shortstop and second base, the new Mets reinforcement will play at third base in this first year with his new team, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post. The situation is complicated after the signing of Jorge Polanco, who arrived on a two-year contract mainly as a designated hitter, although he could also alternate at first base alongside Mark Vientos.

The Mets are looking to continue to strengthen ahead of the 2026 season

The arrival of Bichette brings some peace of mind, but in Queens they are aware that there is still a long way to go to compete against the giants of the West. Bichette will be one of the new faces at Citi Field as David Stearns continues to reshape the team.

The main objective now would be, according to the latest rumors, to snatch the possible signing of Cody Bellinger from the Yankees, who would have an essential role within their offense and their lineup in the outfield for the upcoming 2026 season. Rumors of a $180 million contract for Bellinger over seven years are still up in the air, although it may not be long before we know the fate of one of the most sought-after prospects this season.
