The strategist at the summit: Andy Reid enters 13th season as NFL’s top returning coach

Andy Reid is heading into his 13th season leading the Kansas City Chiefs, and there’s little doubt about who currently reigns supreme among NFL head coaches.

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Reid stands atop the throne as the league’s best returning head coach. But that recognition may still undersell his influence: Reid’s track record suggests he may be the best head coach in football, period.

After securing his third Super Bowl title with Kansas City and reaching the NFL’s biggest stage for the fourth time in five seasons, Reid‘s resume is entering historically rare territory.

Now just one Super Bowl win shy of tying Chuck Noll and Bill Belichick in total championships, Reid isn’t just chasing trophies, he’s building a modern dynasty.

Situational genius separates Reid from the pack

Where Reid truly separates himself from peers is in what experts call “situational football”-the ability to adapt game plans in real-time and prepare players for every possibility.

In fact, that’s the cornerstone of what keeps the Chiefs competitive, even in tough stretches.

“Like Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots teams before them, the Kansas City Chiefs are the masters of situational football,” wrote Dalton Wasserman of PFF.

“The Chiefs played in 12 one-score games last season, including the playoffs, and won all of them. They found a way to reach the Super Bowl for the third straight season because Andy Reid has his entire team prepared for any situation.”

That mastery shows up in advanced analytics. The Chiefs, for much of 2023, struggled offensively. They ranked just 17th in PFF’s offensive grade during the first three quarters of games-a middling performance by championship standards.

But when it mattered most, they flipped the switch: “They slotted into fourth in that same category in the fourth quarter and overtime,” Wasserman wrote. “They simply find ways to step up their game despite their flaws, injuries and lack of explosiveness. That’s a testament to Reid‘s levelheaded approach to the game and wealth of experience.”

What may appear to fans as late-game heroics is actually a reflection of elite preparation. Reid‘s calm demeanor and structured leadership give his team the confidence to execute under pressure.

He’s known for empowering his staff, giving quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes the freedom to create, and staying ahead of trends with relentless film study and creativity.

And perhaps most impressively, Reid has adapted across eras. He began his head coaching career in 1999 with Philadelphia and reached a Super Bowl with the Eagles before reinventing himself in Kansas City more than a decade later.

Now, heading into 2025, Reid commands the game’s best quarterback, has three rings, and holds over 300 career wins.

With his contract extended through 2029, there’s a very real chance he adds even more hardware to his already legendary career. For now, though, Andy Reid isn’t just the best returning coach, he may be the standard by which all others are judged.
