The bad news struck the heart of the Golden State Warriors with the ACL tear suffered by Jimmy Butler. Stephen Curry and company will no longer be able to count on their teammate for the remainder of the season.

However, something else could be resurfacing within the franchise. And that is Jonathan Kuminga, who has watched the last sixteen games pass him by while sitting on the bench.

This difficult situation inside the Golden State locker room could end up representing a rebirth for a player who has done little more than warm the bench game after game.

The opportunities opening up for Jonathan Kuminga

Jonathan Kuminga had requested a trade on January fifteenth, twenty twenty six. This came just one day after he officially became eligible to be moved.

Now, however, Jimmy Butler’s injury could radically change the outlook for the young forward. The door appears open for him to finally display his talent with the Western Conference squad.

Everything suggests that Warriors head coach Steve Kerr may be willing to give him a real opportunity to contribute. The challenge will be convincing Kuminga himself to embrace that role.

A fractured relationship between Steve Kerr and Jonathan Kuminga

Spending extended stretches on the bench clearly frustrated Kuminga and damaged his relationship with Kerr. As a result, the front office must now decide whether to trade him or attempt to salvage the relationship.

Speaking about the situation, NBA insider Shams Charania explained the stakes facing Golden State.

Do you try to find a deal out there in the marketplace that can help the Warriors win and compete without Jimmy Butler? That’s a gaping hole for this team. So, two teams that have interest in Jonathan Kuminga: the Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings. So do the players say DeMar DeRozan? Does that fit the bill of what the Warriors could need without Jimmy Butler? But one way or another, the Warriors are about to find out where they stand with Jonathan Kuminga this season.

Shams Charania

Despite the tension, Kuminga has maintained his professionalism and strong work ethic. If he remains with the team, he will have the support of his teammates. They recognize his daily effort and readiness whenever his number is called.

When given opportunities this season, Kuminga has produced solid numbers. He is averaging 17.5points per game while shooting 45 percent from three-point range.

Whatever decision the Warriors make regarding his future, it will shape both sides moving forward. A new team would welcome his upside, while Golden State would still retain a valuable contributor if he stays.

Either way, Kuminga’s situation has suddenly become central to the Warriors’ plans for the remainder of the campaign. An outcome that only weeks ago seemed highly unlikely for everyone involved here today now.
