The Las Vegas Raiders began their 2025 season with a 20-13 victory over the New England Patriots, demonstrating both offensive progress and defensive resilience.

The game highlighted improvements in execution and suggested that the team could compete effectively if it maintains health and consistency throughout the season.

Las Vegas received the opening kickoff and immediately put together a six-play, 71-yard drive that concluded with a touchdown.

Quarterback Geno Smith completed three of four passes for 58 yards on the drive, including a touchdown pass, signaling early offensive efficiency.

The opening drive illustrated the Raiders‘ capacity to execute plays quickly and create scoring opportunities.

The team continued its momentum on the second drive, advancing 55 yards before a tipped pass from Smith resulted in an interception.

Following the turnover, the Raiders‘ offense struggled, recording three consecutive three-and-out possessions.

Each of these drives lasted fewer than three minutes, underscoring the early-season adjustments typical of a team integrating new plays and personnel.

Time of possession in the first half favored New England, with the Patriots holding the ball for over 18 minutes compared to the Raiders‘ 11.

Despite this, Las Vegas‘ defense limited the Patriots to 10 first-half points, keeping the game within reach at halftime.

Second-Half adjustments lead to victory

The Raiders‘ defense set the tone in the second half. On the Patriots‘ opening drive of the third quarter, Isaiah Pola-Mao intercepted quarterback Drake Maye after limiting New England to 36 yards.

The turnover provided favorable field position and allowed the Raiders to regain control of the game.

Using two significant gains from wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, Las Vegas drove 75 yards over five plays, culminating in a three-yard touchdown run by Ashton Jeanty, marking the first touchdown of his professional career.

The score gave the Raiders a 14-10 lead and demonstrated their ability to capitalize on opportunities created by defensive stops.

Defensively, Las Vegas held the Patriots scoreless in the second half, allowing only three points in total after halftime.

The unit’s performance reflected both discipline and cohesion, proving capable of sustaining pressure and containing New England‘s offensive threats.

The Raiders‘ offensive production, combined with defensive execution, provided a balanced approach that secured the win.

While the first half exposed areas needing improvement-such as sustaining drives and controlling possession-the second-half adjustments illustrated the team’s capacity to respond to challenges and maintain composure under pressure.

Las Vegas‘ victory validates the optimism surrounding the 2025 season. The team showed the ability to overcome early setbacks, execute key plays, and perform in critical moments.

Head coach Pete Carroll has positioned the Raiders as a team capable of competing effectively in the NFL if consistency and health are maintained throughout the season.
