The season began slowly for Cooper Flagg with the Dallas Mavericks. What was expected to be a dominant campaign for the rookie took some time as he adjusted to the professional level and to his teammates.

As the months passed, he began to look much better. Adjusting and rediscovering the outstanding quality he displayed during his lone year in the collegiate ranks. Unfortunately, injuries have taken a toll on him and reduced his chances of being named Rookie of the Year for the 2025-26 season.

Flagg remains the overwhelming favorite to claim Rookie of the Year honors; however, someone is trailing him ever more closely, threatening what had seemed like a foregone conclusion since the start of the season.

Kon Knueppel and VJ Edgecombe are right behind him in the race

Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets and VJ Edgecombe of the Philadelphia 76ers have put Cooper Flagg in a difficult position, as he had stood as the clear favorite to earn Rookie of the Year distinction.

They have managed to capitalize on the Mavericks player’s injuries to insert themselves firmly into the award conversation. Meanwhile, Maxime Raynaud of the Sacramento Kings and Ace Bailey of the Utah Jazz are also drawing closer.

Each player’s numbers in the NBA

Ace Bailey

  • No ranking
  • 12.1 points
  • 4.1 rebounds
  • 1.7 assists
  • No odds yet to be Rookie of the Year

VJ Edgecombe

  • Ranked number 3
  • 15.5 points
  • 5.6 rebounds
  • 3.9 assists
  • +12,500 odds to be Rookie of the Year

Cooper Flagg

  • Last ranked number 1
  • 20.4 points
  • 6.6 rebounds
  • 4.1 assists
  • +130 odds to be Rookie of the Year

Kon Knueppel

  • Last ranking 2
  • 19.3 points
  • 5.5 rebounds
  • 3.5 assists
  • -170 odds to be Rookie of the Year

The competition is tightening, opening the door to more contenders to ultimately capture the award at the end of the season. What once appeared to be a comfortable advantage for Flagg has gradually narrowed as his challengers continue to post consistent performances night after night.

Knueppel’s scoring efficiency and steady production have kept the Hornets competitive, while Edgecombe’s all-around contributions for the 76ers have strengthened his candidacy. Even without leading the statistical charts across every category, both players have demonstrated resilience and growth that resonate with voters.

With several months remaining in the campaign, the Rookie of the Year battle promises to remain one of the league’s most compelling storylines.
