The players the Mets could lose after their collapse and elimination

There are three players who could leave the New York Mets after their collapse and elimination in the 2025 MLB season on Sunday, September 25.

The Mets will face a tough offseason after investing $340 million for this year’s Major League Baseball campaign.

The players the Mets could lose after their collapse and elimination

  • Pete Alonso (first baseman): The biggest free agent the New York Mets will have is slugger Pete Alonso. Shortly after the last game of the season ended, Pete Alonso revealed that he was opting out of his player option and heading to free agency. This could show that Pete Alonso could be unhappy with the New York Mets, especially after they didn’t give him the money he wanted last offseason. This winter, Pete Alonso is likely to get the money he believes he deserves (at least $150 million), with or without the New York Mets. Pete Alonso is likely to first seek a deal elsewhere. The New York Mets have a chance to keep him if they want to give him a lot of money.
  • Edwin Diaz (closer): Star closer Edwin Diaz is also expected to opt out of his option, which would put him into free agency. Either way, it’s hard for Edwin Diaz to justify returning to New York if the Mets can’t sustain success.
  • Ryan Helsley (reliever): The New York Mets acquired Ryan Helsley and expected him to be a star, but the right-hander struggled in Queens. With Ryan Helsley heading to free agency, it is likely that these two parties will part ways. The New York Mets may not be bothered by losing Ryan Helsley, but it could be difficult to lose him and Edwin Diaz at the same time. The Mets will likely try to bring back either him or Edwin Diaz, but it could end in disaster.
