The New York Mets gave up their future for Freddy Peralta with no guarantees in return

TheNew York Mets continued to strengthen their offseason by acquiring a pitcher capable of solving multiple issues within the organization, but that alone does not guarantee a turnaround after their disastrous 2025 MLB season. Freddy Peralta arrives at the franchise in exchange for the sacrifice of several top prospects-a move that significantly impacts the team’s long-term future.

And it is precisely in this scenario where the urgency arises to convince Peralta that committing to the Mets is worthwhile. While the organization is expected to explore a contract extension before his next free agency, according to The Athletic, the team’s primary focus remains on the 2026 MLB season.

Caution is advised-it’s preferable to move carefully rather than risk investing so much prospect capital without fully capitalizing on the opportunity-but amid this uncertainty, reports have surfaced that Peralta would be open to signing a long-term deal with the Mets, according to sources cited by Sports Illustrated.

Freddy Peralta is set to earn $8 million in the final year of his five-year, $15.5 million contract originally signed with the Milwaukee Brewers. All signs point to him landing a lucrative long-term contract next offseason-either in New York or elsewhere.

Key date for the Mets and Freddy Peralta

Discussions surrounding MLB contract extensions typically begin around March during spring training. Given Peralta’s openness, the Mets could realistically restart negotiations before the regular season gets underway.

Peralta is coming off a career-best season in Milwaukee, finishing with a 17-6 record and a 2.70 ERA, clearly the strongest campaign of his eight-year MLB career.

With Peralta’s arrival in New York, the Mets’ starting rotation takes a significant leap forward, featuring him as the staff ace alongside breakout rookie Nolan McLean, plus Sean Manaea, Clay Holmes, David Peterson, and Kodai Senga. The group is further reinforced by young depth options Christian Scott and Jonah Tong, while Tobias Myers adds valuable pitching versatility as both a starter and reliever.
