The ‘Mbappe alert’ jumps again

Kylian Mbappe’s left knee is once again on Real Madrid’s agenda. According to L’Equipe, the French striker interrupted training on Tuesday and his presence against Benfica, in the second leg of the Champions League playoff after the 1-0 first leg, is shrouded in uncertainty. The club is beginning to accept that the problem is not resolved and that continuing to force the issue could have a greater cost.

In the pre-match press conference, Alvaro Arbeloa defended that his star player is ready. He spoke of commitment, intelligence and figures that support his impact. The discourse protects the player and also the technical management. Because the very fact of stressing the Frenchman’s efforts confirms that he competes somewhat conditioned, due to the pain he has been suffering since December and that each game involves a risk decision.

The injury originated after a blow against Celta on December 7 and an MRI scan carried out before the end of the year detected an injury to the external lateral ligament that required at least three weeks on the sidelines. He returned 11 days later, in the midst of competitive pressure and with a final against Barcelona on the horizon. Then came the Copa del Rey elimination against Albacete and a schedule that did not allow for rest. Mbappe only rested against Real Sociedad.

The debate is no longer medical, but strategic. Stopping now could ensure his presence in the decisive stretch of the season and protect his great goal for the summer, the 2026 World Cup. At Valdebebas, they suggest that, whether he plays against Benfica or not, he should have at least 10 days of rest. Getafe and the visit to Vigo appear to be acceptable sacrifices.
