The Giants make a key move ahead of the draft and sign veteran quarterback Brandon Allen

After a difficult campaign that ended with a 4-13 record, the New York Giants enter the 2026 offseason determined to stabilize their quarterback situation ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft. The season featured major turbulence at the position, beginning with veteran Russell Wilson as the starter under head coach Brian Daboll, before a swift midseason shift to rookie Jaxson Dart.

Dart‘s early performances showed promise, including a win over the Los Angeles Chargers and a statement victory against the Philadelphia Eagles, but inconsistency and injuries soon derailed momentum.

Protection issues along the offensive line and a lack of sustained offensive rhythm only added to the instability. With the Giants finishing last in the NFC East for a second straight year, a new regime led by John Harbaugh is now focused on reshaping the roster and bringing clarity to the most important position on the field while also evaluating potential quarterback prospects in the 2026 draft class.

Giants add Brandon Allen ahead of draft

The organization moved quickly to address depth concerns by signing veteran quarterback Brandon Allen, a move announced on X. Allen arrives with extensive backup experience across multiple teams, including stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver Broncos, Cincinnati Bengals, San Francisco 49ers, and Tennessee Titans.

Known for his steady presence rather than explosive production, he is expected to provide insurance behind Dart and veteran Jameis Winston while the front office evaluates long-term options in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Allen‘s career numbers underscore his role as a situational starter and mentor, offering guidance to younger players while maintaining readiness if called upon. He is also viewed as a valuable presence in meeting rooms and film study sessions, helping reinforce Harbaugh‘s emphasis on preparation and structure.

Looking ahead, the Giants hope the combination of a refreshed coaching staff and a more structured quarterback room will translate into progress in 2026. Harbaugh‘s arrival signals a shift toward discipline and long-term planning after a season that saw promising moments quickly erased by injuries, including Cam Skattebo’s season-ending setback and Dart‘s concussion issues.

Despite late wins over the Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys, the front office recognized that inconsistency at the position remained the central obstacle.

With the 2026 NFL Draft approaching, the Giants are expected to remain active in exploring quarterback talent while allowing Dart to continue developing in a more controlled environment.

Competing in a demanding NFC East alongside the Eagles, Cowboys, and Washington Commanders means margin for error is slim, and roster depth will be crucial. The addition of Allen ensures there is an experienced option available, but the organization’s ultimate goal remains finding a durable franchise leader capable of sustaining success.
