The Week 12 NFL game against the Detroit Lions was incredibly significant for the New York Giants. The Big Apple team risked any chance of making the playoffs and could have their season over, and that’s exactly what happened. The loss at Ford Field mathematically eliminated Mike Kafka’s team from playoff contention, leading management to dismiss one of their coordinators.
The Giants’ decision to cut staff again isn’t surprising, as just a few weeks ago they fired head coach Brian Daboll after a string of losses and poor decisions that jeopardized the health of key players like quarterback Jaxson Dart and the running back Cam Skattebo.
Shane Bowen is no longer the Giants’ defensive coordinator, and Charlie Bullen will take his place
The Giants, led by Kafka, fired struggling defensive coordinator Shane Bowen on Monday, significantly shaking up the coaching staff for the second time in three weeks, after Daboll was fired as head coach and replaced on an interim basis by Kafka. Outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen will be named interim defensive coordinator.
He has never previously held a defensive coordinator position. The Giants (2-10) blew a fourth-quarter lead in a loss to the Lions on Sunday for the fifth time this season and for the third straight week. They are the only team eliminated from playoff contention.
Giants achieve historic offensive milestone after Jameis Winston’s outstanding performance
In last Sunday’s Week 12 game against the Lions, Giants backup quarterback Jameis Winston connected with Wan’Dale Robinson on an early trick play, threw a pass to Isaiah Hodgins in the red zone, and then even caught a 33-yard touchdown on another Gunner Olszewski trick play.
He finished with 366 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and one receiving touchdown, while Tyrone Tracy Jr. added 62 rushing yards and 68 receiving yards. In total, New York recorded 517 yards, 25 first downs, and controlled the ball for over 33 minutes. However, even with his outstanding performance, Winston couldn’t secure the win for his team, which has already been eliminated from the 2025 season.
