The mischief of a couple of fans for interfering in a play in the World Series by grabbing Mookie Betts’ glove during Game 4 at Yankee Stadium cost them dearly and one of them, Austin Capobianco, revealed in an interview with The Athletic that what has happened since has been a nightmare for him and his family.
MLB banned him for life from entering any major league ballpark, but three months after the incident, the 38-year-old Connecticut native said he has received hundreds of insults on social media, following the World Series incident. There was even someone who sent a suspicious package to his parents’ house that contained “poop.” He would also receive another one at the office he shares with his brothers at a family food service supply business.
“All the things my family has had to deal with because of me,” Capobianco acknowledged in the interview with The Athletic in which he added: “The non-stop phone calls. People sending me pictures of their ugly looking penises. The packages.”
Capobianco regrets interfering with Mookie Betts
The fan elaborated on his action and admitted that he wished it hadn’t happened, while regretting his expulsion, although he hopes to return to Yankee Stadium someday. For now, he only asks Dodgers fans that after winning the World Series, they should just ‘leave them alone’.
Capobianco described himself as a nice guy who did something silly in front of a camera and concluded the interview with a final reflection on how he has seen his action taken by Yankees and Dodgers fans along with the rest of MLB.
“I am a hero in the land of the Yankees. I am a villain in America,” Capobianco told The Athletic, concluding that he doesn’t really care anymore and: “I just want to be forgotten. That’s all. I want people to forget about me.”
