The Dolphins have ten days to get rid of Tua Tagovailoa and avoid an even more ruinous deal

The 2025 season between the Dolphins and Tua Tagovailoa was turbulent. The results between the two parties were not as expected; the quarterback even ended up as a substitute.

The player’s figures are very low according to the expectations that were raised during the preseason of last season:

  • 2,660 passing yards
  • 20 touchdowns
  • 15 interceptions

Faced with this scenario, Miami and Tua enter a critical moment to define what to do with him, because he no longer fits the team’s objectives. If they fail to trade him this offseason, the only viable option for the organization will be to cut him.

March 13, two days after the start of free agency, seems to be a deadline for the Dolphins to part ways with him. This is because $3 million of his $31 million base salary for 2027 becomes fully guaranteed on that date.

Jeff Howe, a journalist for The Athletic, said that Tagovailoa’s case is extraordinary in the NFL because he is the quarterback with the historically low transfer value.

Tagovailoa was the first $50 million quarterback to be benched for performance reasons, as his level of play has been in marked decline for a couple of years. Quarterback-needy teams are looking at an imperfect market of both veterans and rookies

Which teams are interested in Tua Tagovailoa?

So far, it is officially known that there are four franchises interested, but they are evaluating the economic and sporting conditions of the quarterback, as well as the contractual situation he has with the Dolphins.

  • Arizona Cardinals
  • Minnesota Vikings
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Indianapolis Colts

What does Tua Tagovailoa’s contract say?

The current agreement between the franchise and the quarterback is for four years and $212.4 million, which he signed in July 2024. It includes $167 million in total guarantees and runs through the 2028 season, a financial commitment that will influence any decision Miami makes going forward.
