The Dallas Cowboys are rolling out a major defensive transformation this offseason, and it could change the trajectory of the team’s roster strategy. After a 2025 campaign that saw their defense struggle badly, the organization is preparing to shift to a 3-4 scheme, a move that will have players lining up in new roles and facing unfamiliar responsibilities.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has already outlined some of the key adjustments. One notable change involves Marist Liufau, who will transition to outside linebacker.
“Liufau doesn’t have as much twitch as others, but he has the strength to handle the spot,” Schottenheimer said. “He’ll put on weight and adapt to the position.”
This new 3-4 defense, Schottenheimer emphasized, will differ significantly from previous Cowboys versions.
“To be very clear: this 3-4 defense is not the old 2-gap, where you sit there and read blocks. We will be getting vertical, using our hands, and shedding,” he explained.
The emphasis will be on movement, speed, and aggression rather than passive gap responsibility.
A new version of the Cowboys defense
The changes will ripple across the entire defensive front, with even established players seeing new roles. Kenny Clark is expected to serve as the primary nose tackle, but Schottenheimer indicated that the front line will be fluid.
“Quinnen Williams is great in any system,” he said. “Osa Odighizuwa will also see action in multiple spots.”
The goal is to create mismatches and keep opponents guessing, rather than rely solely on traditional alignments.
Donovan Ezeiruaku will also be asked to shift positions. As a rookie, Ezeiruaku ranked 38th out of 115 edge defenders per PFF.
Under the new scheme, he will move to outside linebacker, a change that could further develop his pass-rushing abilities while allowing him to leverage his athleticism in space.
Schottenheimer‘s approach is designed to make his roster more versatile and finding the optimum fit for his players.
“Everybody’s going to be moving,” he said. “It’s about finding the best fit and putting our guys in positions to succeed.”
For a Cowboys defense that lagged behind the league in key areas last season, this willingness to experiment could pay immediate dividends.
A risk that could pay off
The switch to a 3-4 also coincides with the Cowboys‘ focus on the NFL Draft, where a top-rated linebacker could provide a boost in both pass rush and coverage.
However, any incoming rookie will have to adjust to the system quickly, learning new techniques and responsibilities in a defense that prioritizes speed and aggression over conventional reads.
While some may view these changes as a gamble, the Cowboys don’t have a lot to lose.
A defense that struggled to keep opponents in check in 2025 can only benefit from experimentation and depth. If the scheme and personnel clicks, the Cowboys could see a dramatic turnaround, setting up a more balanced team heading into the 2026 season.
Schottenheimer‘s message is clear: everyone will have to adapt, and the Cowboys are betting that versatility and aggressive football will be the formula for success.
