Donald Trump’s campaign to remodel and improve the state of the United States capital’s monuments – including the White House – seems to have extended to the realm of golf.
The Department of the Interior revoked the 50-year lease held by the nonprofit organization (National Links Trust) for the renovation of three of Washington’s municipal golf courses, clearing the way for the Trump administration, which awarded the contract in 2020, to take control of the management of these facilities.
The government considers that the maintenance and improvement obligations of the three golf courses have not been met: Rock Creek, East Potomac and Langston. The Interior Department alleges $8.8 million in unpaid rent as justification for revoking National Links Trust’s contract, an allegation they strongly deny. Under NLT’s public lease, rent payments can be offset by improvements to the courses and they claim that the National Park Service had approved these rent offsets.
Donald Trump is passionate about golf and seems to want to make his mark on the capital by improving these facilities in his own way, something he is quite good at, although the NLT claims to have more than doubled the rounds played and revenue from these three municipal courses since taking over the lease, while keeping prices affordable. A comprehensive renovation of Rock Creek had already begun.
