The changes Manny Pacquiao will have to make to try to beat Mario Barrios

After four years away from professional boxing, Manny Pacquiao has decided to return to the ring. On July 19, the Filipino legend, the only eight-division world champion, will face current WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in Las Vegas. His return has generated a wave of divided expectations: while his followers celebrate the return of a historic figure, others are skeptical about the possibility of success at 46 years of age.

Although Pacquiao has remained active in exhibition bouts, his last official appearance was in 2021, with a loss to Yordenis Ugas. In that time, Barrios has maintained a steady competitive pace. The age difference, sixteen years, and the physical wear and tear accumulated in more than seven decades of fighting make this contest a monumental challenge for the Filipino.

Physical and Mental Adjustments

Facing a younger and more athletically gifted opponent demands a renewed strategy. Veteran trainer Justin Fortune, who has been part of Pacquiao’s team for years, explained that training can no longer be the same as in the past. The preparation will focus on optimizing performance without overloading the body, adjusting loads, prioritizing recovery and honing specific skills.

Beyond the physical aspect, Pacquiao must enter the ring with a different mental approach. He can no longer rely on the offensive frenzy that characterized him in his prime. This time, the key will be tactical intelligence, knowing how to pace his energy and capitalizing on experience against Barrios, who represents a real challenge because of his youth and power.

A fight with more questions than answers

Analysts such as Robert Garcia have pointed out that Barrios could pose a serious threat if he manages to connect with power. The trainer has been clear: although the Mexican is not the most feared welterweight opponent, the current Pacquiao has no margin for error.

However, there are also those who argue that this fight comes at the right time. Barrios won his belt after Terence Crawford left the division and has had inconsistent performances, such as his recent split decision victory over Abel Ramos. This could play in Pacquiao’s favor, as he has shown that he knows how to take advantage of tense situations with a mixture of experience, discipline and hunger for victory.

Manny Pacquiao has made the impossible a habit throughout his career. Comparisons to legends such as George Foreman, who was champion at 45, fuel hope that he can still surprise the world.
