Terence Crawford criticizes Mike Tyson’s performance against Jake Paul

Undefeated boxing champion Terence Crawford has voiced strong disapproval regarding Mike Tyson‘s recent exhibition bout against social media personality-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

Speaking on the Club Shay Shay podcast hosted by Shannon Sharpe, Crawford made it clear that, while he respects Tyson‘s legacy, the fight did not reflect well on the sport or the former heavyweight champion.

“I love Tyson,” Crawford said. “Tyson shouldn’t have been out there. At all.” He elaborated that the match lacked competitive integrity and leaned heavily toward spectacle over substance.

The fight, which drew massive attention globally, pitted the 58-year-old Tyson against the 27-year-old Paul-an age gap that was not lost on fans or experts.

Crawford also took to social media following the bout, bluntly stating, “That s*** was trash,” and highlighting the wide gap in punch statistics between the two fighters. His comments sparked a wave of discussion among fans and boxing professionals alike about whether such fights help or harm the sport’s reputation.

A growing concern over exhibition bouts

This match is part of a growing trend where ageing legends return to the ring to face much younger and often less-experienced opponents, largely for commercial purposes.

While these events bring in viewership and revenue, critics argue that they blur the lines between legitimate athletic competition and entertainment.

The Tyson-Paul bout, held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, drew significant attention, but not all of it was positive. For many, including Crawford, the event underscored concerns about the physical risks involved for older athletes and whether these matches dilute boxing’s credibility.

Though Tyson has always been a beloved figure in the sport, and Paul has undeniably brought new audiences to boxing, the pairing raised ethical questions.

Should fighters well past their prime be stepping into the ring with much younger opponents? And what responsibility do promoters have in ensuring safety and fair competition?

Crawford‘s remarks reflect a broader sentiment within the boxing community that the sport must strike a balance between drawing public interest and preserving its integrity. As more crossover and celebrity boxing events emerge, the voices of elite professionals like Crawford serve as a crucial reminder that not all attention is good attention.

In the aftermath of Tyson‘s performance, Crawford‘s direct commentary adds weight to the ongoing debate surrounding the future of boxing and the standards it chooses to uphold.
