Tennis’ darkest desire: “I hope Alcaraz and Sinner hate each other”

Former tennis player Steve Johnson said on the ‘Nothing Major’ podcast that “hopefully Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner hate each other” so that their clashes would heat up.

I think in 10 years’ time Alcaraz and Sinner will be very close. But right now they are fighting for their place in the legacy and history of the sport

“I think Alcaraz and Sinner are friends; I don’t think they hate each other, I wish they did because it would make for great drama. But in 10 or 15 years, when they look back and each have 20 Slams, they’ll have a Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal type friendship,” the 35-year-old explained.

Steve Johnson believes that “I think in 10 years Alcaraz and Sinner will be very close. But right now they’re fighting for their place in the legacy and history of the sport.”

“The same with Roger and Rafa: when they were older and could look back with some objectivity, they became very close. But at the time, I don’t think Roger and Rafa in 2009, 2010, 2012 were such friends. Probably Roger was annoyed that Rafa kept winning Roland Garros,” he recalled.

Jannik Sinner clarified the true nature of his relationship with Carlos Alcaraz

Italian Jannik Sinner confirmed, after being crowned ATP Finals champion, that he maintains a great relationship off the court with Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the world number one.

“I think Carlos has great friends and I have great friends too. In the end it’s normal for everyone to tend to hang out with people from their own country. Although there are also other players I feel very close to: Jack Draper, Reilly Opelka… I feel they are sincere and I get along very well with them,” he said at a press conference.

“But with Carlos it’s a bit different for reasons related to the track. We have a very good relationship, rivalry, whatever you want to call it. I feel that we can still talk about everything. I think it’s great. Off the track we are good friends. We respect each other in a very healthy way. Also the teams, my team, get along very well with them. I think there is a good harmony,” he added.
