Team USA stunned for second final in a row as Venezuela claim first World Baseball Classic in dramatic fashion

In a thrilling conclusion to the 2026 World Baseball Classic, Venezuela shocked the baseball world by defeating the United States 3-2 in the final on Tuesday night, claiming its first WBC championship in history.

The game, which took place at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, marks a historic milestone for Venezuelan baseball, which had never previously reached this pinnacle on the international stage. This victory makes Venezuela the fourth nation to lift the WBC trophy since the tournament began in 2006.

From the outset, Venezuela’s approach combined disciplined pitching with timely hitting. Veteran Eduardo Rodríguez was nothing short of brilliant, delivering 4.1 scoreless innings against one of the strongest lineups assembled in WBC history. He allowed just a single hit and one walk while striking out four batters, giving Manager Omar López a reliable bridge to the bullpen.

Rodríguez had struggled earlier in the tournament against the Dominican Republic, but his dominance in the final silenced critics and provided Venezuela with a strong foundation.

His performance also highlighted the unusual pressures on players during international competitions, as Rodríguez reportedly received messages from three major league organizations requesting careful usage of bullpen arms on consecutive days.

Dramatic finish seals Venezuelan triumph

The game’s first run arrived in the third inning when Venezuelan captain Salvador Pérez advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Maikel García. That early lead set the tone, and Wilyer Abreu extended it in the fifth inning with a solo home run, marking his second monumental knockout-round homer of the tournament.

The Venezuelan lineup, while lacking the household names of the U.S. or Dominican teams, demonstrated remarkable depth and consistency.

Despite Venezuela’s early advantage, the United States mounted a late rally. With the score 2-0, Bryce Harper delivered a majestic 432-foot, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, tying the game and briefly reigniting hopes for an American comeback.

Harper‘s heroics were a storybook moment, but the U.S. offense struggled to capitalize otherwise, generating only three hits overall and failing to advance runners beyond first base, leaving several scoring opportunities unfulfilled.

The decisive moment came in the ninth inning. After a leadoff walk and a stolen base placed runners in scoring position, Eugenio Suárez delivered a clutch RBI double into the gap to retake the lead. Venezuela’s bullpen, which had already carried a heavy load in the semifinals, held firm for the remaining outs, cementing the 3-2 victory.

Manager Omar López praised his team’s resilience and grit, noting that the squad’s performance mirrored the determination of the Venezuelan nation.

For the United States, it marked the second consecutive final loss in the event after falling to Japan three years ago, and extended their championship drought since 2017.
