Super Bowl Champ slams Colts for signing 44-year-old Philip Rivers

The Indianapolis Colts made one of the most surprising moves of the NFL season by signing 44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers.

Rivers, who last played in the 2020 NFL season, is coming out of retirement following a devastating season-ending Achilles injury to Daniel Jones, but his return to the gridiron has been met with both excitement and criticism.

Super Bowl champion and current ESPN analyst Ryan Clark did not mince words regarding the decision.

“I believe this is foul … I believe this is incompetent, and I also believe it is irresponsible,” Clark said, referencing concerns over Rivers‘ ability to physically handle the demands of the game after nearly five years away.

The worry is not over Rivers‘ knowledge of the system, but rather the toll that NFL hits can take on a veteran body, especially one unaccustomed to the speed and intensity of modern defensive schemes.

Rivers‘ return comes at a challenging time. The Colts face a difficult stretch of games as they face the likes of the Seattle Seahawks. San Francisco 49ers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans.

Despite the risks, some believe the move is justified. Clark added, “Don’t get me wrong, if somebody called me after five years and said you can play, I might go try and give them a play too. Philip ain’t wrong, Shane Steichen and the Colts are.”

Colts head coach, Shane Steichen, is known for adapting offenses to fit his personnel, and Rivers‘ experience may provide a stabilizing presence for a team struggling to find a consistent quarterback after Jones’ injury.

Hall of Fame implications and career legacy

Rivers‘ return also carries implications for his Hall of Fame eligibility. According to Pro Football Hall of Fame rules, active players must wait five years after retirement to appear on the ballot. By returning to the field, Rivers delays that timeline, potentially pushing his official Hall of Fame consideration further into the future.

Nonetheless, Rivers ranks among the top quarterbacks in league history in career passing yards, completions, attempts, and touchdowns, giving him a strong foundation for induction.

Off the field, analysts and fans alike are debating the wisdom of this move. Sports Illustrated notes that veteran quarterbacks returning after long layoffs have experienced mixed results; while some, like Brett Favre in his later years, managed productive seasons, others have struggled with timing and durability issues.

Rivers‘ experience and leadership may help guide the Colts in the short term, but the long-term physical risks cannot be ignored.

Whether Rivers‘ comeback will spark a playoff push or further highlight the challenges of aging athletes in high-impact sports remains to be seen. As Clark emphasized, the decision is controversial but understandable in the context of an NFL team facing unexpected injuries.
