Leading the AFC squad this year in the 2026 Pro Bowl Games is none other than Steve Young, a man whose experience and financial portfolio in the world of private equity has made him one of the wealthiest individuals to ever wear an NFL jersey.

While Eli Manning’s and Bill Belichick’s recent Hall of Fame snubs has fans debating the value of the event, Steve Young is the perferct example of what a player can achieve after retiring.

What is Steve Young’s net worth?

According to the latest data from ‘Celebrity Net Worth’, Steve Young’s net worth is estimated at a staggering $200 million.

To put that in perspective, Young earned just under $50 million in total salary during his 15-season career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the San Francisco 49ers. While that made him one of the highest-paid players of the 1990s, the major part of his wealth has actually been generated on offices rather than on the field.

Young’s $200 million places him in an elite bracket of NFL figures. According to a recent BroBible report on the highest net worths in NFL history, Young consistently ranks near the top, rubbing shoulders with icons like: Roger Staubach ($600M+), Tom Brady ($300M+) and Peyton Manning ($250M).

The main source of his wealth

We can say that Young’s financial trajectory shifted significantly in 2007 when he co-founded HGGC (Huntsman Gay Global Capital), a private equity firm based in Palo Alto. Unlike many other athletes who simply lend their names to brands, Young took an active role as a Managing Director, becoming part of the company from the inside. Under his tenure, the firm has managed billions of dollars in cumulative capital commitments, specializing in middle-market leveraged buyouts.

Also, since his retirement and over two decades, Young was a staple of ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown, earning a reported $2 million annually before his departure during the network’s 2023 layoffs.

That is not it. As he lives in Silicon Valley, Young has been a savvy investor in various tech ventures while simultaneously running the Forever Young Foundation, which focuses on children’s charities.
