The Golden State Warriors entered the 2025 season hoping to climb back into contender status. Instead, the franchise sits under .500, and uncertainty surrounds its future. Fans and analysts are now questioning whether the championship dynasty led by Stephen Curry and head coach Steve Kerr is nearing its final chapter.

During a recent appearance on The Athletic NBA Show, Kerr offered clarity on one key topic: as long as Stephen Curry remains active, Kerr has no plans to coach elsewhere.

First of all, I will never leave Steph Curry.

Kerr emphasized. Whether the team rebuilds or reloads, he intends to stay until the superstar point guard walks away from the game.

Travel could force Kerr to consider retirement

Although Kerr acknowledged he won’t voluntarily leave the Warriors while Curry is still competing, he made another revelation: the NBA’s exhausting travel schedule might eventually push him out of coaching.

I think the thing that will take me out of coaching is the travel.”… “The late-night flights and 3 a.m. arrivals.

Steve Kerr

The coach admitted.

Kerr turned 60 this year, and after decades as a player, broadcaster, Team USA head coach, and Warriors coach, the grind is wearing on him. Long road stretches, like Golden State’s brutal November slate of seven games across five cities in 12 days, take a toll. That stretch coincided with Curry falling ill and missing games, and Kerr acknowledged that the constant movement affects everyone on the team.

Kerr added that he isn’t retiring at season’s end, but a crossroads is approaching.

There will come a time when decisions have to be made, Warriors, myself, my family,

hH said.

That’s coming eventually.

The coach is currently finishing a contract that expires after the 2025-26 season. If Golden State fails to return to contention, some believe that year could mark the end of his tenure.

Steve reflects on a future

For many players, retirement brings an identity crisis. Kerr never experienced that moment. After he stepped away as a player, media and coaching roles kept him embedded in the league without interruption. The NBA has been his home his entire adult life, and he admitted that stepping away from coaching would bring unfamiliar emotional challenges.

It’s going to be a much more difficult transition for me,” Kerr said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, and that’s an uneasy feeling.

Still, Kerr knows the decision will eventually arrive, especially as Curry and Draymond Green approach the end of their careers. For now, though, the Warriors remain in the Western Conference playoff hunt, and Kerr’s focus is set squarely on navigating the turbulence, finding solutions, and keeping Golden State competitive.

Whether retirement comes in one year or several, one thing is clear: the fate of Steve Kerr’s coaching career appears tied to Stephen Curry, and once that era closes, basketball may finally stop dictating the veteran coach’s life.
