Stephen Curry’s long-standing partnership with Under Armour was once viewed as one of the most successful athlete-brand relationships in modern sports.

When Curry signed with the company in 2013, both sides benefited enormously. Curry became the face of Under Armour Basketball, while the brand used his rise to superstardom to challenge industry giants in the sneaker world.

For more than a decade, the collaboration appeared stable, creative, and mutually respectful. However, recent revelations indicate the relationship had been deteriorating long before the official split.

Behind the scenes, trust reportedly weakened due to disagreements over Curry‘s signature footwear line. According to multiple sources, Curry was unhappy with the creative direction of the Curry 13 sneaker. His concerns were not minor tweaks but fundamental objections to the overall design and vision.

Despite this feedback, Under Armour allegedly chose to move forward with the product as planned. That decision proved costly, as Curry had long been deeply involved in shaping his signature line, and being overlooked marked a major shift in how the partnership functioned.

While brands and athletes often navigate creative tension, this situation reflected a huge breakdown in communication. Curry‘s role had extended beyond endorsement into collaboration, making the disregard of his input particularly damaging. Over time, that disconnect appeared to change how he viewed his future with the company.

On-court signals and a quiet exit

Signs of trouble soon became visible to fans and industry insiders. At the start of the NBA season, Curry notably avoided wearing his latest signature shoe. Instead, he appeared in a Series 7 takedown model, a surprising move for a player synonymous with his flagship line.

This subtle shift raised questions about his satisfaction with the brand and hinted that negotiations or internal discussions were already strained.

By November, Curry‘s distance from Under Armour became increasingly apparent. His on-court choices suggested that the partnership was no longer aligned, even before an official announcement was made. On November 13, both parties confirmed the end of their relationship, bringing an era to a close after more than 10 years.

The following night erased any remaining ambiguity. Curry was seen warming up in Nike Kobe sneakers, immediately signaling his status as a sneaker free agent. The moment underscored how quickly the transition occurred once the separation became public.

Under Armour later explained the split as part of a larger restructuring effort. Founder Kevin Plank emphasized the company’s need to refocus, streamline operations, and reinforce discipline across the brand. While that explanation highlighted business priorities, the newly revealed details suggest creative friction played a major role.

The breakup reflects more than a disagreement over one shoe. It illustrates how even the strongest partnerships can unravel when shared vision fades, communication breaks down, and trust is slowly lost.
