Stephen Curry ends the year climbing all time records while reflecting on who he left behind

As the 2025 calendar winds down, the Golden State Warriors find themselves in a position that has become frustratingly familiar, hovering in the middle of the pack. With a 17-16 record, the team’s struggles have forced Stephen Curry to shoulder a massive offensive load once again. Curry is currently putting up 28.8 points per game, his highest scoring average in three seasons, but his career-low 4.3 assists per game suggests a disconnect on the floor. Whether it’s a lack of chemistry with Jimmy Butler, the usual volatility of Draymond Green, or a young core that hasn’t quite taken the leap, Curry is doing the heavy lifting by himself.

Despite the team’s mediocrity, Curry’s individual brilliance remains the league’s biggest draw. That was never more evident than during the Warriors’ recent 120-107 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. In a rare display of road-team reverence, the Barclays Center crowd broke into loud “MVP” chants for the man who has spent nearly two decades changing the way basketball is played.

Stephen Curry Overtakes Garnett on the All-Time Scoring List

Curry walked into Brooklyn needing a big night and delivered exactly that, finishing with a game-high 27 points. With a signature three-pointer during the second half, Curry officially eclipsed Kevin Garnett’s career mark of 26,071 points, moving into the 21st spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. He ended the night with 26,077 career points, a testament to his longevity as he navigates his 17th professional season.

Reflecting on surpassing the “Big Ticket,” Curry showed the humility that has defined his career. “To pass those types of individuals, and especially a guy like KG-a champ and what his career meant-is special for sure,” Curry said after the game. “So each guy I passed, I’m honored.” At 37 years old, Curry is clearly motivated by more than just individual milestones.

He is chasing a fifth championship ring, a feat that would move him past LeBron James and place him in the rarified air of icons like Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, and Tim Duncan. With the window of his prime beginning to narrow, every game takes on a new level of urgency.

Curry’s Scoring Pace Sets His Sights the Top 15 All-Time

If Curry maintains his current clip of 28.8 points per game through the remaining 49 games of the season, he is on track to add well over 1,000 points to his total. Such a run would see him skyrocket into the top 15 of the all-time scoring list, likely leaping over legendary big men Tim Duncan and Hakeem Olajuwon. In the current NBA landscape, only the “Old Guard” of Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James still sit ahead of him among active players.

The Warriors will look to close out 2025 with a “homecoming” of sorts as they visit the Charlotte Hornets tomorrow. However, the true test awaits them at the dawn of the new year. Golden State is scheduled to kick off 2026 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the reigning champions and currently the most formidable challenge in the league. For Curry to keep the Warriors relevant and continue his climb up the history books, he’ll need more than just MVP chants; he’ll need his teammates to finally start carrying their share of the weight.
