Stephen A. Smith accuses Zion Williamson of hiding food, Pelicans fire back

The ongoing tension between Zion Williamson and outspoken commentator Stephen A. Smith has erupted once again, pulling the New Orleans Pelicans directly into the spotlight.

What began as routine commentary about conditioning and professionalism has now escalated into a very public feud, blurring the line between basketball analysis and personal attack.

During a recent segment, Smith asserted that troubling details about Williamson‘s habits had come from individuals within the organization and even people close to the former No. 1 pick.

“People who called up and encouraged us to get in his a** because of some of the things that he was doing,” said Smith.

“You got people that are alcoholics, you got people that are drug addicts, and stuff like that. What was Zion’s problem? Food! Food addict! You even have rumors – and literally, I’m here thinking it was a joke, and somebody told me – how he got busted hiding food under his bed.”

The tone of the remarks struck many as unusually harsh. Rather than focusing on performance trends or injury history, the conversation veered into character judgments.

The timing was notable. Williamson had just opened up in an interview with Malika Andrews on ESPN about the emotional weight of his injury setbacks. He reflected on the Jones fracture in his right foot that wiped out his entire 2021-22 season and described how public criticism intensified while he was sidelined.

Unable to compete, he felt powerless as doubts about his commitment circulated.

Pelicans push back as Zion reinvents himself

Now in his seventh NBA season, durability remains the central question surrounding Williamson‘s career. He has played in just 259 of a possible 574 games – roughly 45 percent availability.

Recurring foot and hamstring injuries have interrupted promising stretches, including a season in which he managed only 30 appearances. Even when he strings together healthy outings, recently reaching a career-best 35 straight games, the conversation often shifts back to sustainability.

However, the 2025 offseason introduced a new chapter. At media day, Williamson unveiled a dramatically slimmer physique after committing to a rigorous conditioning program.

Reports indicated he shed nearly 50 pounds over the summer, signaling a deliberate effort to reshape both his body and the surrounding narrative. Teammates and coaches praised his renewed focus, pointing to visible improvements in agility and stamina.

Trade speculation has occasionally hovered over the franchise cornerstone, but the organization showed no hesitation in defending him. Shortly after Smith‘s comments aired, the Pelicans’ official X account posted a playful but pointed video targeting the broadcaster with the caption: “Stick to solitaire, Stephen.”

The clip referenced a viral moment when Smith appeared distracted by a card game on his phone during a matchup.
