Sophie Cunningham’s 2025 WNBA season with the Indiana Fever didn’t end the way she envisioned, but the veteran guard is already turning the page-on and off the court. As she works her way back from a torn MCL, Cunningham is also gearing up for one of her most meaningful offseason projects: the return of the Sophie Cunningham Classic, scheduled for January 2026.

Cunningham appeared in just 30 games during her first year in Indiana, missing the final nine contests after suffering the knee injury. Despite the setback, she still averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and one steal per game, providing steady perimeter defense and toughness when healthy. Since the season ended, her rehabilitation has progressed steadily. After returning to sprinting in early November, Cunningham has now begun light on-court work, an encouraging sign as she eyes a full return next season.

Sophie Cunningham balances rehab with giving back

While her focus remains on getting healthy, Cunningham has not slowed down when it comes to supporting the next generation of players. In January, her annual Sophie Cunningham Classic will tip off for the fourth time, continuing to grow as one of the premier showcases for elite high school girls’ basketball.

The three-day tournament will run from January 9-11, 2026, at Bob Burchard Court inside the Southwell Complex at Columbia College. Cunningham recently shared updated details on social media, describing the event as a “3-day showcase created for young female athletes by female athletes.”

“So, you guys know I do the Sophie Cunningham Classic every single year,” Cunningham said in a previous message. “It’s a high school girls’ basketball tournament. There is a lot of top-ranked teams in the United States, a lot of top-ranked players who are going to be at this Classic, so I’m super, super excited for that.”

The field is expected to be loaded with elite talent. Addison Bjorn, the No. 10-ranked player in the 2026 class, headlines the group of committed participants. She’ll be joined by Eve Long, ranked No. 8 in the 2027 class, and Jordyn Haywood, the No. 5 prospect in the 2028 class. The schedule features eight games on both Friday and Saturday, followed by five games on Sunday, giving fans and scouts a packed weekend of high-level competition.

For Cunningham, the Classic represents more than just basketball. It’s an opportunity to invest in young athletes, provide visibility, and give back to the game that shaped her career. Even while sidelined, her leadership and influence remain evident.

As she continues rehabbing with an eye toward a strong return to the WNBA, Cunningham’s ability to balance recovery with meaningful community impact underscores her value beyond the stat sheet. Whether it’s inspiring young players in January or locking down opponents next season, Sophie Cunningham is making sure her presence is felt-every step of the way.
