Is Caitlin Clark losing momentum as the face of the WNBA? The league kept moving forward, and it looks like her Indiana Fever teammate Sophie Cunningham has stolen the spotlight – even knocking the biggest star in women’s basketball off the top of internet search charts.
Earlier this week, Google released its annual “Year in Search” report revealing the 10 most-searched athletes in the United States… and Cunningham came in at No. 7 – the only woman to crack the Top 10.
A Top-10 ranking with no Caitlin Clark
It shocked a lot of people. Cunningham’s popularity exploded this season thanks to her on-court play, off-court personality, and her close relationship with Clark-Cunningham moments that went mega-viral. Yet Clark, who remains the most popular player in the entire WNBA, didn’t even make the list.
To be clear: this ranking measures raw search interest and visibility, not market value or on-court impact.
Sophie Cunningham’s reaction to the Google ranking
When asked about landing in the Top 10 on the Show Me Something podcast, Cunningham said:
“You know, I don’t really know how to feel about that. It’s kind of cool, I guess. You’re the only female up there. That’s fun… I think it’s kind of cool, but there’s no real big feeling toward it. People just want to know more about me!”
She added with a laugh:
“I mean, yeah. But I’m sure last year [Clark] was probably No. 1, right? She blew up in college… this is just this year.”
Next season will be fascinating: Caitlin Clark is expected to return fully healthy and try to reclaim the throne she temporarily lost… to her own teammate.
