Sinner, world No. 1: “I’m proud to be Italian. That’s why I had to give up the Davis Cup”

Jannik Sinner is already in Turin for the ATP Finals and will be the subject of the documentary “Jannik, oltre il tennis” broadcast by Sky. In it, the world number one dwells on a point that he is very clear about: “I was born here and I’m glad it was. This country deserves a lot. Even more than I can give it.”

Sinner explains calmly and firmly. “We have facilities, coaches, players, different mentalities that add up. That in the north they live in one way and in the south in another is not a problem: it is a strength. With everything that is in Italy, we can compete with anyone. We just have to push all to the same side. Italy deserves it.”

The interview was recorded at the Candiolo Institute, in front of patients and medical staff. There he also spoke about his role models. “As a child I looked up to Andreas Seppi. Then came Federer. Then I met Nadal and thought: ‘humanly and sportingly, he is enormous’. And with Djokovic you realise that what he does is exceptional”. He then made a point that resonated in the room: “We move a ball. The important difference is made by you, those who work in medicine and research”.

Sinner expressed his absence from the Davis Cup final bluntly. “After a whole year of competing, a week of rest or preparation makes the difference. You arrive fresher, more eager and, above all, you reduce the risk of injury. This year I had no doubts: it was what I had to do,” he said. He recalled, however, that in 2023 the story was different. “I told Berrettini that we would win the Davis Cup together. He was there supporting us. I wanted to keep that promise. We kept it. But I already knew that this year I was not going to be there.”

A strange situation explained by the protagonist

And he sent a message that he considers important: Italy is still a candidate. “We have a great team even without me. We can afford to leave out the number 26 in the world. There are Cobolli, Musetti, the double is very strong… And there is Berrettini. The option to win is still there”. Now, the focus is on Turin. The Finals begin on November 9.
