Shedeur Sanders stuns Todd Monken with Godfather style horse head prank that no one saw coming

The Cleveland Browns expected scrutiny around their quarterback situation this offseason, but Shedeur Sanders managed to create headlines for an entirely different reason after sending new head coach Todd Monken a birthday gift that felt straight out of a mob movie.

Monken revealed at the NFL scouting combine that shortly after taking the job, a mysterious package arrived at his home on his 60th birthday.

At first, he assumed it was something ordered by his wife. Instead, it was a decorative porcelain horse head, sent by his young quarterback.

“I thought it was from my wife,” Monken said. “Open it up, it’s this porcelain horse head. And it’s from Shedeur.”

The object immediately drew comparisons to a famous scene from The Godfather, but Monken insisted there was no hidden message behind it. Curious nonetheless, he asked Sanders for an explanation.

“I asked him, ‘What was the meaning?'” Monken said. “And he just said, ‘Well, I really liked it. I got myself one.’ Well, great.”

Rather than taking offense, the coach leaned into the humor of the situation. He even placed the sculpture prominently in his office alongside Browns memorabilia so Sanders would see it during visits.

A light moment during a high stakes transition

Monken‘s arrival in Cleveland marks a major reset for a franchise searching for stability, particularly at quarterback.

After coordinating one of the league’s most productive offenses in Baltimore, he now faces the challenge of determining whether Sanders can become the long term answer.

The former Colorado star endured an inconsistent rookie season but showed flashes that intrigued the organization, especially late in the year when he started the final seven games.

However, the depth chart remains unsettled with veteran Deshaun Watson expected back from injury and other candidates competing for the role.

Despite the uncertainty, Monken spoke positively about Sanders‘ raw ability and work ethic.

“What I see in Shedeur is elite playmaking ability. It’s in him,” Monken said, while acknowledging that the young quarterback still has significant growth ahead.

Their off field interaction, unusual as it may be, suggests a rapport is already forming.

“I’ve talked to him three times, I think,” Monken added, noting that Sanders has made an effort to visit and connect since the coaching change.

The real decision still lies ahead

While the porcelain gift sparked laughs, the Browns‘ quarterback competition is anything but lighthearted. Monken made clear that no starter has been chosen and that the evaluation process will extend through offseason workouts and training camp.

“I don’t think there’s enough of a sample size recently with any of our candidates… that you can say, ‘That’s our starter.’ You just can’t,” he said.

He pointed out that each contender has shown promise at different points. Sanders has displayed moments where he “looks like a starting NFL quarterback,” while Watson‘s past elite performances cannot be ignored.

The team could also explore adding another passer through the draft, further complicating the picture.

For now, the horse head remains a quirky symbol of a partnership still in its earliest stages. If Sanders ultimately claims the starting job and leads a turnaround, the gift may be remembered as an odd but memorable beginning.

If not, it will simply remain one of the stranger stories from an offseason already filled with uncertainty.
