Shaquille O’Neal becomes small when he confesses that two 12-year-old boys beat him up

Shaquille O’Neal said this week that his body simply does not work the way it used to, admitting he was beaten in a casual pickup game by two 12-year-old kids and could not move well enough to keep up.

The moment came during a podcast conversation with Tom Brady and served as a rare, honest snapshot of what aging looks like for a former superstar.

The story surfaced on The Big Podcast, where O’Neal and Brady were talking about longevity and how long elite athletes believe they can keep going.

Brady, whose career became synonymous with pushing past traditional limits, casually suggested he would be ready if he had to play an NFL game tomorrow. O’Neal did not pretend to be anywhere near that place.

“Confession time. I got smoked by two German kids in the Bahamas playing basketball,” O’Neal said.

The room laughed. Brady immediately followed up: “How old were they?”

“12,” replied O’Neal.

“They were there on the court by themselves. It wasn’t like a big fan thing. One of the kids start talking, but I couldn’t move left or right. My shot was flat. I was like, ‘Who was I? Where did it go?'”

When dominance turns into memory

That line carried more weight than the joke that came before it. O’Neal built his career on overwhelming physical presence. His dominance depended on movement, strength, and intimidation. When those things fade, they do not slip away quietly. They disappear.

Fans had already seen hints of that reality years earlier. O’Neal‘s final NBA season with Boston showed a version of him far removed from his peak. Over time, images from that stretch turned into a meme, resurfacing whenever a star delivers a performance that looks nothing like the player people remember.

Now 53, O’Neal no longer pushes back against that narrative. He tells stories like this one instead, openly and without embarrassment.

Brady tried to add perspective by recalling another legend aging in real time. He brought up a video of Michael Jordan picking up a basketball years after retirement.

“I saw the video of MJ when he went up to New York and he rented that house. He was like, ‘Let me see if I can make a free throw.’ And then he made it and he said, ‘Man I haven’t shot a ball in a long time.’ So that was like, I just wanna see him do it,” Brady said.
