On July 12 in New York,Shakur Stevenson will defend his WBC lightweight world title against Mexican William Zepeda, in what could be his last fight under the promotion of Matchroom Boxing.

The undefeated American boasts a record of 23-0, making it clear that he has only one goal and that is to deliver a strong performance that backs up his quality and finally silences all his critics.

In a recent interview with journalist Mike Coppinger, Stevenson spoke about his strategy for facing Zepeda, a boxer known for his offensive style, hard hitting and physical strength.

However, in a sarcastic tone, Stevenson was confident, declaring: “I’m so scared… I’ve never been so scared in my life,” he said with a laugh, making it clear that he is not worried about how good his opponent may be.

However, the champion was realistic about the challenge posed by Zepeda, clarifying that although he is not afraid, he is aware of the virtues of his rival and is excited about this new challenge in his career.

He’s a great fighter. He said he’s going to stop me before the tenth round. We’ll see

What is Shakur’s record?

With 23 wins, zero losses and zero draws, Shakur Stevenson is the clear favorite against the Mexican, and his approach remains true to his style prioritizing accuracy and control, he has also hinted that he is not looking for the knockout but does not rule it out:

In a message posted on social media, Alalshikh issued a warning to boxers who resort to evasive styles: “I don’t want to see any more Tom and Jerry-type fights. We want fighters who leave it all in the ring,” said Stevenson.

Does Stevenson criticize Canelo Alvarez?

Although he did not mention names directly, the message was interpreted by many as a criticism of unexciting fights, such as Canelo Alvarez‘s recent bout against William Scull. It was also speculated that it was aimed at figures such as Devin Haney and Stevenson himself, who are known for their defensive style.

Stevenson seems to have adopted a more aggressive stance for his next presentation and his message was clear, he wants to earn recognition: “When I beat him, I want them to say I’m the best. I don’t want excuses”.

Thus, the fight between Stevenson and Zepeda will not only define the fate of the WBC lightweight title, but also the American’s place in a new era of boxing, where it is not only technique that is valued, but also entertainment.

When is the Stevenson vs Zepeda fight?

On July 12, the eyes of the world will be on the ring in this fight that, according to Shakur Stevenson‘s statements, promises to be a real spectacle.
