Despite having his fair share of doubters and critics, Shakur Stevenson continues to dominate at his own pace and – most importantly – win every time he steps into a boxing ring. That was once again the case two weeks ago, in what was what many believe his best performance to date.
While Stevenson didn’t score a knockout, he ran circles around Teofimo Lopez, who came in on a five-fight win streak and owned a world championship belt that Stevenson was gunning for. It was Stevenson’s first bout at welterweight, which makes his performance all the more impressive. Now, eyes turn to another welterweight showdown with a title belt on the line.
Ryan Garcia, despite losing two of his last four fights – one of which was ruled a No Contest and resulted in a one-year suspension for him – will get a chance at the WBC welterweight title, currently owned by Mario Barrios. The two will square off in Vegas on February 21, and the winner will be in the driver’s seat to set up a potential unification fight next.
Shakur Stevenson heats up Ryan Garcia beef with eyes on a 144-pound showdown
The idea of Garcia coming out on top has already sparked intrigue in Stevenson. Garcia’s father recently spoke about potentially fighting Stevenson at 140 pounds, which Stevenson said “I’m down” for. Now, Stevenson is on the offensive, putting together a barrage of social media posts aimed at Garcia.
It sounds like Stevenson wants to battle Garcia at a catchweight of 144 pounds. He took a slight dig at Garcia’s history, too, claiming that “VADA will be involved“. Garcia’s failed VADA test is what resulted in his one-year suspension.
Garcia has to get past Barrios first to set the Stevenson fight up. They could still meet in the ring regardless, but it wouldn’t be a great look for Stevenson to fight Garcia coming off of two-consecutive losses.
