Serena Williams might not love this as Alexis Ohanian says this social app is better for their kids

In an era dominated by algorithms, endless notifications, and popularity contests disguised as connection, Alexis Ohanian’s words landed differently. Calm, deliberate, and deeply parental, the Reddit co-founder explained why AirbudsWidget is the kind of social platform he would actually want his children to grow up with and why most modern networks miss the point entirely.

At first glance, his stance might even raise eyebrows at home. After all, Serena Williams has embraced visibility, branding, and public platforms throughout her legendary career. But Ohanian isn’t criticizing social media itself, he’s questioning what kind of social media children are being handed. His argument isn’t about fame or reach; it’s about the environment.

A parenting choice that sparks a bigger conversation

For Ohanian, the problem with most platforms isn’t content it’s design. Follower counts, endless notifications, and dopamine driven feedback loops train kids to perform instead of connect. AirbudsWidget, he argues, strips all of that away. No popularity races. No algorithmic pressure. Just people sharing what they’re listening to, quietly and authentically.

This perspective isn’t new for him. In 2020, Ohanian famously stepped down from Reddit’s board, publicly stating that he wanted to help build a better internet not just for users, but specifically for his daughters. Parenthood changed his definition of success. Growth at any cost stopped being impressive when measured against responsibility.

That’s where this moment resonates with so many parents. Every day, families are forced to decide what’s “safe,” what’s “healthy,” and what’s simply unavoidable in a tech saturated world. The question isn’t whether kids will interact with technology, it’s whether they’ll be shaped by systems designed to exploit attention or ones built to respect humanity.

In the age of artificial intelligence, the noise is only getting louder. Content is faster, sharper, more addictive. And yet, Ohanian’s endorsement of a quieter platform feels almost radical. It suggests that the future doesn’t have to be louder than the present, just more intentional.

Serena Williams may or may not agree with every word her husband says. But the conversation he’s starting matters. Because behind the headlines and endorsements is a universal parental truth: every mom and dad is searching for tools that help their kids grow up connected, curious, and human not optimized, ranked, or reduced to data points.

And in that sense, this isn’t really about one app. It’s about deciding what kind of digital world we’re willing to leave to the next generation.
