Serena Williams gets Sha’Carri Richardson to open up about her mental health

The connection between Sha’Carri Richardson and Serena Williams has grown into something more meaningful than a casual bond between two decorated athletes.

For Richardson, Williams has always represented more than a tennis champion. She is a figure whose path has encouraged others to stand firm in who they are, even when the world watches with a critical eye.

Williams has openly celebrated Richardson‘s rise and even explained the moment she became a “super fan.” It happened during the 2023 US Championships, when Richardson stepped onto the track in her familiar orange wig.

Just before the 100-meter final, she pulled it off, revealing braided hair underneath, and then sprinted her way to a convincing victory.

The act itself was a declaration of self-trust and reinvention, and it resonated with Williams, who has long been praised for her own unapologetic presence.

A conversation shaped by honesty and lived experience

In a recent conversation shared on Williams‘ X profile, Richardson spoke openly about the emotional work that accompanies life at the top of a global sport.

She did not try to package her journey into a neat success story. Instead, she acknowledged how complicated it has been to stay grounded when her life is observed from every angle.

“The mental health journey is an ongoing journey,” she said.

“It’s never a finish line, ironically, me saying that. There’s never a finish line, um, to when it comes to that journey, but just particularly us being in front of, like, the world when it comes to our lives.

“Like, we have to be very mindful of just what state of mind that we’re in when it comes to first ourselves, and like you said, a directed environment, but then also, like, you know, the world.

“And I do feel like my mental health journey has been a journey for me that I am, like, strangely figuring out as life is going on. Like, I’m learning that life is a forever battle.

“I mean, not battle, but forever, like, kind of roller coaster, but it’s still the best ride to be on. I think that’s kind of where I’m at right now. That makes sense. It’s like I’m on a roller coaster, but I’m enjoying this ride.”
