Sean McVay is embracing a “different” approach to his coaching staff as he enters his 10th season at the helm of the Los Angeles Rams.
Following a significant offseason overhaul, McVay admitted that while the new-look staff is a departure from his previous iterations, he is confident that the change will yield better results, specifically following the blockbuster addition of Kliff Kingsbury.
“What’s intriguing about it is it’s been different from what we’ve done,” McVay told The Athletic’s Nate Atkins. “And just because it’s different doesn’t mean it can’t be better.”
The Rams made a splash in February by hiring Kingsbury just one month after his shocking release from the Washington Commanders.
Kingsbury’s high-stakes resume
While many league insiders speculated that Kingsbury would take over as the offensive coordinator, McVay confirmed that the job of OC has been handed to former passing game coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase.
Kingsbury will instead serve as the Assistant Head Coach, providing a veteran sounding board for McVay. Despite the new hierarchy, the fundamental structure of the Rams’ game day will remain intact: McVay is slated to continue calling the plays, while Scheelhaase manages the day-to-day offensive operations.
Kingsbury arrives in Los Angeles as one of the most respected, albeit polarizing, offensive minds in football. His tenure in Washington saw a dramatic turnaround in 2024, where he took an offense that ranked 25th in scoring and catapulted it to fifth in the NFL.
While the Commanders’ numbers plummeted in 2025, many analysts viewed Kingsbury’s firing as premature. He was dealt an impossible hand last season, navigating a roster decimated by injuries to cornerstone players like Jayden Daniels, Austin Ekeler, and Terry McLaurin.
A decade of McVay with the Rams
As McVay prepares for a milestone 10th season, the integration of Kingsbury marks a full-circle moment for the coaching staff. Kingsbury brings a wealth of experience, including:
- Arizona Cardinals: Head Coach (2019-2022)
- USC: Offensive Analyst (2023)
- Texas Tech: Head Coach (2013-2018)
By bringing in a former rival head coach to serve as his right hand, McVay is signaling a willingness to evolve. For a Rams team looking to reclaim its spot at the top of the NFC West, “different” might be exactly what the doctor ordered.
