San Diego Padres will sign Nick Pivetta to strengthen their starting rotation

San Diego Padres will boast a spectacular starting lineup with the arrival of Nick Pivetta, who will leave the ranks of the Boston Red Sox after four and a half seasons with 107 starts and a record of 37 wins. This deal will allow the Padres organization to keep costs low for the second consecutive season.

Before the arrival of Pivetta, the San Diego Padres’ starting pitching staff for the 2025 season looked solid with Dylan Cease, Yu Darvish, Michael King, Matt Waldron and Randy Vasquez among the standouts. The arrival of the former Red Sox pitcher will allow him to compete for the fifth spot, but it has certainly been fortuitous following the absence of starting pitcher Joe Musgrove due to injury.

How will Nick Pivetta’s multi-year contract with the San Diego Padres be structured?

The agreement includes termination options after the second and third seasons.

  • 2025: $3 million signing bonus and $1 million salary.
  • 2026: $19 million salary
  • 2027: $14 million salary
  • 2028: $18 million salary

Nick Pivetta, 32, is one of the few reliable starting pitchers left on the free agent market. Among his qualities, he is known for his durability, length and propensity to miss the hitter.

Despite losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, Padres general manager A.J. Preller has been calm, but with the restlessness of not having advanced in the playoffs and therefore has carried out these moves that are not necessarily costly and maintain an allowable salary cap which has not exceeded $200 million.

Ahead of the 2025 campaign, the California team brought back catcher Elias Diaz and recently agreed to the signing of Connor Joe and Jason Heyward, who will share left field duties.

It should be remembered that the San Diego Padres are in the National League West Division with the current MLB champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the always tough San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies. But they are certainly a team that will compete for the division pennant and a better performance in the playoffs.
