Russell Wilson set for historic New York Giants debut against Washington Commanders

Speculation continues to swirl around Russell Wilson’s performance with the New York Giants. Some believe his arrival is exactly what the franchise needed to spark a turnaround, while others argue his best days at the elite level are behind him. One thing for certain: Wilson still has plenty to prove if he wants to remain among the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

The New York Giants enter the 2025 season with sky-high expectations, eager to show significant improvement and deliver stronger results. Led by head coach Brian Daboll, the Giants will kick off their regular season against the Washington Commanders in a highly anticipated matchup that will showcase Russell Wilson’s debut under center

For the Giants to succeed, Russell Wilson must deliver his best at Northwest Stadium, proving he still has the skills to compete at the highest level. While some believe Wilson is poised for a historic opening match, opinions remain divided, whether it will be remembered for greatness or for struggles on the field.

The NFL record Russell Wilson can break in his New York Giants debut

Despite the quarterback battle within the Giants, Russell Wilson has secured the starting role with the full confidence of head coach Brian Daboll to lead the offense, even after rookie Jaxson Dart’s impressive preseason.

Russell Wilson’s true level heading into the 2025 season remains uncertain, fueling doubts about his ability to perform with the Giants. CBS Sports journalist Garrett Podell analyzed the situation and delivered a harsh verdict, predicting that Wilson’s debut with Big Blue could turn into a major disappointment.

Garrett Podell went even further with his prediction, stating that Russell Wilson’s debut could cement an unwanted milestone. According to the CBS Sports journalist, Wilson might lead the Giants to become the first team in the 21st century to be outscored by 20 or more points in three straight season openers. A record that New York fans desperately hope never comes true.

No team has suffered this fate in three straight season openers in the 21st century, but according to Podell, the Giants will be the first. His reasoning? Russell Wilson is their starting quarterback. The analyst argued that at 36 years old, Wilson is no longer capable of consistently leading an NFL team to victory.

The past of the New York Giants

In any case, many believe that the arrival of Russell Wilson is a major upgrade for the New York Giants, especially when considering the struggles and mistakes of former quarterback Daniel Jones during his time with the team.

Daniel Jones began the 2023 season with the Giants in disastrous fashion, suffering a crushing 40-0 defeat against the Dallas Cowboys. The following year, things didn’t improve, as New York once again opened their campaign with a heavy loss, this time a 28-6 setback against the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium

Russell Wilson represents a strange upgrade over Daniel Jones, yet his level is still far from elite. Despite being a former Super Bowl champion, Wilson has struggled to meet expectations in recent years. Since leaving the Seattle Seahawks, he delivered only one standout season with the Denver Broncos before failing to maintain consistency both in Denver and later with the Pittsburgh Steelers, his most recent team.

For now, Russell Wilson faces his first major challenge against the Washington Commanders, a matchup where he must lead the Giants to victory. The pressure is not only on him to prove he can still perform at the highest level, but also to give confidence to the team and silence those already calling for rookie Jaxson Dart to take over as QB1 for New York.
