Rory McIlroy is opening up about the turbulent period in his personal life, following his temporary divorce filing in 2024 and subsequent reconciliation with wife Erica Stoll.
The four-time major champion shared candid insights on his journey in the latest season of Netflix’s Full Swing, revealing the emotional wake-up call that led him to re-evaluate his priorities.

In the third episode of the series, McIlroy, 35, discussed the challenge of balancing his professional commitments with family life.
“Sometimes I’ve struggled with the balance of trying to be the best golfer, trying to be the best husband or the best dad.
Sometimes I get overwhelmed and it can be a little too much for me,” he admitted.
McIlroy’s introspection followed the dramatic turn in his marriage, which saw the couple temporarily split in April 2024, just days before the PGA Championship.
However, after a brief period apart, McIlroy and Stoll decided to stay together, a decision that marked a fresh start for their relationship.
McIlroy emphasized that certain aspects of his life are best kept private, but opened up about his renewed focus on both his golf career and his family.
“It was a wake-up call for me to say, ‘Let’s just focus on the golf for a little bit,'” he said.
The couple, who are parents to 4-year-old daughter Poppy, are now moving forward stronger, with McIlroy expressing gratitude for his family’s unwavering support.
Reflecting on their future, McIlroy shared an intimate detail from a conversation with fellow golfer Martin Kaymer ahead of the 2024 U.S. Open.
“If it was up to her, she wouldn’t move to England straightaway but she definitely wants to spend more time there,” McIlroy revealed, shedding light on Stoll’s desires for their family’s next chapter.
Despite the challenges, McIlroy is optimistic about what lies ahead.
“Thankfully, everything has worked out for the best, and we’re happy and moving forward,” he said.
After winning the 2024 DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, McIlroy expressed his appreciation for his family, “Their support means the world to me.”
