Rory McIlroy delivers brutal takedown of Bryson DeChambeau: “The only way he gets attention”

Rory McIlroy has just poured gasoline on his fiery feud with Bryson DeChambeau, delivering a stunning personal jab at his rival just days before they are set to clash at the Ryder Cup. In a new interview, McIlroy accused DeChambeau of using other top players’ names simply to stay in the headlines.

“I think the only way he gets attention is by mentioning other people,” McIlroy told the Guardian in an interview published Saturday. “That is basically what I think of that. To get attention, he will mention me or Scottie [Scheffler] or others.”

The scathing comment is the latest shot fired in a rivalry that has become one of the most personal in modern golf. It adds another layer of drama to the highly anticipated 2025 Ryder Cup, which kicks off next weekend at Bethpage Black in New York.

McIlroy vs. DeChambeau: The escalating war

The bad blood between the two stars has escalated dramatically over the past year. Their feud intensified at the Masters in April, where McIlroy secured the career Grand Slam.

After being paired together for the final round, DeChambeau claimed McIlroy gave him the silent treatment for the entire 18 holes. McIlroy later fired back that he was simply focused, stating, “I’m not going to try and be his best mate out there.”

We are at the beginning of another historic rivalry

DeChambeau, a prominent LIV Golf member, got his revenge at the 2024 U.S. Open, defeating the staunch PGA Tour supporter by a single stroke after McIlroy agonizingly missed a putt from less than three feet on the 16th hole.

From Tommy Bolt vs. Eric Brown in the 1950s to the recent Brooks Koepka vs. DeChambeau saga, golf has a rich history of rivalries. Now, with an estimated 50,000 raucous fans expected each day in Farmingdale, the next chapter of McIlroy vs. DeChambeau is set to be an explosive one.
