Robert Suárez and the Padres part ways: Why did the star closer choose to become a free agent?

The San Diego Padres had a season to remember. The team not only finished second in the NL West, just behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, but also put up a fight against the Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card Series. However, the team just lost one of the architects of that playoff run, pitcher Robert Suárez.

The star reliever joined the Padres in 2022 from the Hanshin Tigers of the NPB. Upon his arrival, Suárez signed a five-year, $46 million contract, of which he had completed only three years.

During his time in San Diego, Suarez pitched in 206 games, posting a 22-13 record with 77 saves and a 2.91 ERA. This year alone, the Venezuelan pitcher led the NL with 40 saves.

However, after losing the NL Wild Card series 2-1 to Chicago, the San Diego front office appears to be focusing on bolstering other positions, such as designated hitter and first base.

Why did Suarez leave the Padres?

New York Post Sports insider Jon Heyman reported today that Suarez opted for free agency, forfeiting the $16 million remaining on his contract.

Neither Suarez nor the Padres have commented on the matter. However, analysts speculate that the team was unwilling to offer him the long-term contract he was hoping for.

Experts believe Suarez’s arm will command at least a four-year, $80 million contract in the upcoming free agency period. His unexpected departure leaves the Padres with one more spot to fill in their bullpen.

What’s next for Suarez and the Padres?

With the season just winding down after the Dodgers’ World Series victory, the free agent market is only now taking shape. Thus, the future of Suarez and the Padres remains uncertain.

Press reports indicate that several teams are already pursuing Suarez. While nothing is official yet, the word on the street is that the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Braves, and Tigers could try to poach the closer.

The Padres, meanwhile, will likely turn to Mason Miller as their primary closer. The reliever arrived before the trade deadline in a deal with the Athletics and will have some big shoes to fill.
