Red Sox could target Pete Alonso after Rafael Devers trade: analysis and possibilities

The Boston Red Sox took an unexpected turn by trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on June 15, 2025, thus freeing up a large amount of salary. The next possible step: to target Pete Alonso, the powerful first baseman of the New York MetsDevers, a star third baseman and central hitter, had just signed a contract worth more than USD 330 million for 11 seasons, but his defensive performance had been questioned. In addition, the deal freed up more than USD 250 million from the long-term budget

This saving not only avoids continuing with a high expenditure, but also opens up the possibility of investing in key players who fit into the roster immediately.

Advantages of having a player like Pete Alonso

The Mets first baseman has been a home run machine since 2019 (244 in total), second only to Aaron Judge. In 2025:

  1. He hit .293 with 17 home runs and 63 RBIs.
  2. He posted a .960 OPS, ranking fourth in MLB

He has an opt-out clause in his current contract (two years, $54 million) and is expected to enter free agency this winter. The most attractive touch: as a right-handed hitter, his profile fits perfectly with the design of Fenway Park, especially the historic “Green Monster,” which favors his pull-hitting style

How much will Pete Alonso’s new contract be?

According to estimates from Spotrac, his market value would be around $31 million a year, which would translate into a four-year, $124 million contract or even close to $200 million in a more aggressive offer

For the Red Sox, having that payroll after the Devers trade would allow them to get a star first baseman with immediate impact.

Pete Alonso’s signing, advantages and challenges

Key benefits:

  • It strengthens the first base area, a vulnerable space after Devers’ departure
  • He provides offensive power and stability to the lineup, especially with another right-handed hitter like Alex Bregman, if Boston can keep him
  • It raises fans’ expectations after the disappointing departure of their idol.

Challenges to consider:

  • Competition in hiring: the Mets and other deep-pocketed teams also want him.
  • The contract would be substantial, although Boston could absorb it thanks to its financial flexibility

The transfer of Rafael Devers was an emotional blow, but it freed up key capital. Pete Alonso, with his power and ideal profile for Fenway, represents a real opportunity to rebuild the offense and reignite the excitement of the Red Sox fans.

This well-evaluated and executed strategic move could mean the competitive rebirth of the Red Sox. What is clear is that Boston has the resources, the need and the reason to do so.
