Phillies face tough decision, need to take action before trade deadline

A leading MLB expert has suggested that the Philadelphia Phillies should be concerned as the trade deadline approaches, pointing to specific deficiencies in their roster that could hinder their championship aspirations this season.

The Philadelphia Phillies, despite their solid position in the National League standings, have cause for concern as the MLB trade deadline approaches. According to Bradford Doolittle, the Phillies face several crucial decisions that could determine the success or failure of their championship aspirations this season. The team’s front office is reportedly working hard to address major weaknesses before the opportunity to bring in talent runs out.

Philadelphia has established itself as a legitimate contender in 2025, with strong performances from its star-studded lineup, including Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner. However, the expert points to vulnerabilities in their pitching rotation and bench depth that have become increasingly apparent as the season progresses. With other National League powerhouses such as the Dodgers and Braves actively strengthening their rosters, the Phillies risk being left behind if they do not act decisively.

The weaknesses of the current Phillies roster

The Phillies’ starting rotation, once considered a strength with Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola at the helm, has shown signs of vulnerability in recent weeks. Doolittle specifically highlighted the team’s need for reliable middle relief options and potentially another starter to create a championship-caliber pitching staff. “Their rotation is full of pitchers, but they need more depth if they want to compete in October,” the source said. “The bullpen has been inconsistent at key moments, and that’s a recipe for disappointment in the playoffs.”

Who did the Phillies acquire in the trade?

Although Rafael Devers is believed to be the top prospect, several pitchers have been linked to Philadelphia in trade rumors, including possible targets from teams that are out of contention. The Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and Colorado Rockies have arms that could be available, although asking prices remain high in a sellers’ market

Dave Dombrowski, known for his aggressive deadline decisions throughout his career, faces the challenge of determining which prospects are expendable in search of immediate help.

To make matters worse, there is the health status of several current Phillies pitchers. The team has dealt with nagging injuries that haven’t necessarily landed players on the injured list, but have limited their effectiveness, in addition to Jose Alvarado’s suspension.

While the Phillies make a decision, they must remember that the MLB trade deadline is July 31.
