In a significant move for the New York Mets, star first baseman Pete Alonso has agreed to a new two-year contract with the team. The deal, which is pending a physical, includes an opt-out clause after the first season, providing Alonso with the option to explore free agency if he chooses. For the upcoming season, Alonso will earn $30 million, reflecting his value as one of the premier power hitters in Major League Baseball.

Alonso, affectionately known as the “Polar Bear,” has been a cornerstone of the Mets’ lineup since his impressive debut in 2019. Over his career, he has consistently demonstrated his prowess at the plate, averaging 43 home runs and 112 RBIs per 162 games. His return to the Mets is a significant boost for the team as they aim to build a competitive roster for the 2025 season.

The contract breakdown includes a $10 million signing bonus and a $20 million salary for 2025, with a $24 million player option for 2026. Alonso’s performance in the 2024 postseason, where he hit four home runs and drove in 10 RBIs, showcased his ability to perform under pressure and solidified his value to the team.

Everyone is excited about this deal

Mets fans have eagerly awaited Alonso’s return, and his re-signing is being celebrated as a major victory for the organization. Mets’ General Manager expressed his excitement, stating, “Pete Alonso is an integral part of our team, and we are thrilled to have him back. His leadership and talent both on and off the field are invaluable.”

Alonso himself expressed his enthusiasm for the new deal, saying, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue my career with the Mets. This team and city mean a lot to me, and I’m excited for what the future holds.”

As Alonso continues to build on his impressive career, the Mets hope to capitalize on his power-hitting prowess and leadership both on and off the field. With Alonso secured, the Mets can now focus on further strengthening their roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
