Pete Alonso’s contract could be cheap for Steve Cohen after stretching the rope too far

Pete Alonso has become one of the most beloved players by Mets fans and they made him feel that way in the last game by acclaiming the Polar Bear in the context of the renewal of his contract with the New York team.

During the Amazon Day celebration at Citi Field, the stadium erupted with chants of “We want Pete!”. This moment seems to have been decisive, as days later, Mets owner Steve Cohen himself flew to Tampa to hold private talks with Alonso and his agent, Scott Boras, suggesting that his renewal is imminent.

Although what was discussed at the meeting has not been shared, everything seems to indicate that Alonso’s renewal is close to being finalized. Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million contract with an opt-out at the end of the season.

Pete Alonso’s statistics with the Mets

Through 70 games, the Mets first baseman is batting .298 with an .981 OPS, 17 home runs and 63 RBIs. It’s a strong return after a 2024 season full of ups and downs.

Now, the chants of MVP have even begun to replace conversations about his contract. However, Alonso keeps his head on his true goal and in an interview with The New York Post he shared his excitement and gratitude for the Mets fans.

It’s nice, I appreciate it. It’s still very early, and ultimately the only thing I want is to contribute and help the team win

“I think last year, experiencing what postseason baseball is like… This year, I’m very motivated to get back there. It’s an addictive kind of baseball, and I want to do everything I can to take the team there, and then go beyond what we did,” Alonso said

Alonso has been key for the team, especially at a time when other players, such as Juan Soto, were not performing at the expected level.

Pete Alonso talks about Kodai Senga’s injury

Despite his great performance, not everything has been positive for Alonso this season. In the Mets‘ 4-3 victory over the Nationals on Thursday night, Alonso could not hide his sadness after an unfortunate incident

In the sixth inning, his poor throw to first base caused pitcher Kodai Senga to land awkwardly, suffering a thigh injury that forced him to leave the game.

For Alonso, this moment was difficult to overcome. “I still feel horrible because, for me, I was just trying to make a baseball play. I was just trying to make a play for my pitcher… I tried to make the best throw possible. It just sucks. It’s horrible to be involved in that. Senga is one of our guys and it sucks to see him go. I’d hate to see anyone get hurt,” said Alonso.
