Patriots vs. Texans shatters ESPN viewership records in divisional round

The 2026 NFL Divisional Round matchup between the New England Patriots and the Houston Texans did more than determine a trip to the conference championship game. It rewrote the history books of sports television in the United States, driven by the massive audience that tuned in to watch Drake Maye lead New England to victory and continue his path toward the Super Bowl.

According to official Nielsen figures, the game averaged 38 million combined viewers across ESPN and ABC platforms, making it the most-watched event in ESPN’s history since the cable network was founded in 1979.

The game, which ended in a 28-16 Patriots victory on Sunday, January 18, 2026, surpassed every previous broadcast on the network, including college football national championship games and marquee editions of Monday Night Football.

For The Walt Disney Company, ESPN‘s parent company, the milestone carries even greater significance. Excluding Super Bowl broadcasts, which rotate among broadcast networks, this matchup stands as the most-watched sporting event in the company’s history.

Viewership peaked at 44.9 million viewers late in the fourth quarter, as fans tuned in to witness the conclusion of the game ahead of the start of the next contest on the prime-time schedule. This record was not an isolated occurrence but rather confirmation of a growing trend: it marks the third consecutive year in which ESPN’s final NFL game of the season set a new audience record for the company, surpassing Texans vs. Chiefs (2025) and Texans vs. Ravens (2024).

Other historic playoff viewership records

The 2026 postseason weekend delivered historic ratings across multiple networks, not just ESPN. For example, the matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and the Chicago Bears, played earlier on the same day as the Patriots-Texans game, averaged 45.4 million viewers, becoming the most-watched divisional round game in NBC history.

Meanwhile, the game between the Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos drew 39.6 million viewers, setting a new benchmark as the most-watched Saturday playoff game in U.S. television history. That figure surpassed the previous record of 37.5 million viewers set by Packers vs. 49ers two seasons earlier.

In addition to its traditional broadcast success, the Rams-Bears game generated a digital audience of 5.3 million viewers through the Peacock app and other NFL platforms, marking the largest streaming simulcast audience ever recorded by NBC Sports for a non-Super Bowl event.
