Following this, Patrick McEnroe, former captain of the US Davis Cup team, said on his radio show ‘Holding Court’ that “if you put the best junior player in the world, the best 17-year-old, against Sabalenka, he would beat her 6-1, 6-1 or something like that. But to me that’s irrelevant”.
Despite these statements, McEnroe said he is a big fan of women’s tennis. “I’m not saying this to disparage women’s tennis, I love women’s tennis. If there’s a good match, I’ll watch it more than a men’s match where there’s a crushing victory.”
